Project background
The Queensland Government, through the TransLink Transit Authority, is working with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the Australian Government to construct a new transit centre at Noosa Junction.
The new Noosa Transit Centre will become the main public transport hub in the area and will be serviced by TransLink bus services operated by Sunbus, inter-city coaches and tourist courtesy mini-buses.
Communication and consultation with the community commenced in 2007 under the previous Noosa Shire Council Works Planning Team.
Development of a concept plan followed, and TransLink has been working closely with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council over the past two years to refine the design to maximise benefits for the community.
The site for the new transit centre, on the northern section of the existing Cooyar Street car park, was selected as the most appropriate location following technical investigations and consultation with key stakeholders.
Benefits of the new transit centre
The new transit centre will:
- integrate all active and public transport modes operating in the Noosa area including:
- TransLink bus services, operated by Sunbus
- inter-city coach services
- tourist courtesy mini-buses
- pedestrians and cyclists
- reduce traffic congestion in and around the Hastings Street precinct
- improve the efficiency and reliability of bus services in the area
- encourage more people to use public transport for most of their journey
- provide increased capacity for future public transport requirements
- help reduce negative environmental impacts caused from private vehicle usage by encouraging the use of public transport
- provide an open space for public use
- increase passenger arrivals at Noosa Junction, which will assist in the economic revitalisation of the precinct.
Key features of the new transit centre
The transit centre will include:
- seven bus stops split across two sheltered bus platforms
- a large landscaped public space between the bus platforms that will contain comfortable seating, an information pod, public toilets and bicycle storage
- streetscape improvements, including new pavement and street furniture, along the shopfront footpaths adjoining the Cooyar Street car park to enhance the pedestrian shopping street and retain car parking for short term parking and deliveries.
Proposed design
The Noosa Transit Centre is being designed as an accessible, safe and attractive environment for passengers. The transit centre and associated streetscape improvements will reflect the unique look and feel of Noosa.
Will the bus stops or services change?
Changes to local bus stops and services are being considered. These changes will ensure the new transit centre is appropriately integrated into the public transport network and make it easy for people to use public transport within Noosa and to other parts of the Sunshine Coast.
TransLink will ensure passengers are provided with sufficient notice about any bus stop or service changes closer to completion of construction.
