What is a smart card?

It's a thin, compact card about the size of a credit card. The card surface is made of PET (recyclable plastic) material that is environmentally friendly. Smart cards contain microprocessors and memory that allows the card to be programmed to accommodate various applications, including fare collection for public transportation systems.

The go card is the public face of TransLink Transit Authority's new smart card.


How does it work?

A tamper proof micro chip and antenna are built into the card. Both the smart card and the card reader communicate using radio waves via wireless communication.

Your go card can not be read by a passing bus or train because the card must be placed less than 10cm or 4 inches from a card reader and held in that position before it is activated.

The card itself contains no battery, but operates from electromagnetic energy received from the reader.


Global use of smart card technology

Automated fare collection (AFC) systems are used in major public transport systems throughout the world, including London, New York and Hong Kong.

The introduction of go card will decrease cash handling and allow faster boarding times. go card will provide information about travel patterns around the region, allowing TransLink to plan for future population growth and transport needs.


Why is TransLink Transit Authority investing in go card technology?

go card is the next step in the State Government's commitment to deliver a fully integrated, convenient and flexible public transport system across South East Queensland. The go card initiative is on par with leading transport systems worldwide in cities such as London, Hong Kong, Singapore and New York.
