What is the Bribie Island park 'n' ride?

Benefits of a park 'n' ride
A park 'n' ride facility on Bribie Island will help to:
  • reduce traffic congestion between Bribie Island and Caboolture by increasing public transport use
  • encourage more people to use public transport for most of their journey
  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing vehicle kilometres travelled
  • provide safe, high quality passenger waiting facilities
  • reduce parking congestion and overcrowding at Caboolture station.
The Queensland Government, through the TransLink Transit Authority is making public transport easier and safer to catch with planning under way for a new park 'n' ride facility on Bribie Island.

A park 'n' ride facility on Bribie Island is required to improve access to public transport for long distance commuters.

The new park 'n' ride will provide better access to public transport by allowing people to park their cars in a central location before transferring to a bus to complete their journey.

Currently bus services operating between Bribie Island and Caboolture rail station and town centre have to travel long loops to service local bus stops before heading to the mainland.

About the planning

TransLink has consulted with key stakeholders, including Caboolture Shire Council and Bribie Island Coaches, and conducted technical investigations to identify a location for the park 'n' ride on Bribie Island.

The following sites were assessed as part of initial investigations:
  1. Sunderland Drive north of Faraday Street, Bellara
  2. Sunderland Drive, corner Hornsby Road, Bellara
  3. Village Avenue, corner Victory Road, Bongaree.

The site at Victory Road (option 3) was selected as the most appropriate for the following reasons:
  • minimal, if any impacts to the environment and wildlife in the area – read more on the environmental investigations
  • facilitates efficient bus operations – the site is located on all current bus routes
  • allows safe and easy access for private vehicles
  • offers good pedestrian and cycle connections
  • integrates with surrounding land uses.


The site at Sunderland Drive (option 1) was not selected due to its significant environmental and property impacts. The site posed noise concerns due to its proximity to existing residences along Verdoni Street.

Investigations of the site on Hornsby Road (option 2) deemed it unsuitable due to its cultural heritage values and environmental impacts. This site would also impact on traffic close to the shopping centre and has a significant risk of flooding.

To ensure the park 'n' ride met the needs of the local community, TransLink made the design and location of the facility available for public comment from Monday, 19 May to Friday, 13 June 2008.

More than 130 community members met with staff at two information sessions to provide feedback in person. Comments were also received via telephone, email and online feedback forms.

Key issues raised during consultation included:

    Safety and security of the park 'n' ride facility (including pedestrian access)

    Passenger safety and security will be enhanced with the use of lighting and security cameras throughout the park 'n' ride and an emergency phone on the platform. The bus station and waiting area will also be highly visible to passing traffic.

    Pedestrian safety will be addressed with the use of pedestrian refuges on Victory Road and Village Avenue to link footpaths to the park 'n' ride.

    Adequate bicycle storage

    Sheltered bike racks and bike lockers will be provided at the park 'n' ride facility near the waiting area.

    Need for improved services

    The TransLink network planning team will be addressing the need for improved services on Bribie Island in a review of services in this financial year.

    Ways to improve connections between bus and train services at Caboolture, as well as ways to integrate local and long distance services on Bribie Island will be investigated as part of this review. Services will also be reviewed to maximise the benefits of the park 'n' ride facility once open.

    The community will be kept informed of any changes to the bus services prior to any changes being implemented.

    Access to the park 'n' ride facility

    A staged delivery approach has been developed for the 240 space park 'n' ride. Current plans indicate that 120 car spaces will be provided at each stage of delivery.

    The current design for the park 'n' ride facility will allow cars to access the parking area via a new section of Village Avenue to be constructed.

    The need for access to the facility via an extension of Fortune Avenue will be assessed during the second stage of delivery, and consider the development of the surrounding land.

    Shelter and coverage of the platform

    The bus platform will be sheltered using steel structure and glass weather screens. Passenger seating will be situated beneath this shelter.

    The shelter will be large enough to cover a full bus load of passengers (approximately 50 sqm).



Design and landscaping

Because local communities around South East Queensland are different, each park 'n' ride facility is designed individually to fit in with the 'look and feel' of each area.

The Bribie Island park 'n' ride will be designed as an accessible, safe and attractive environment for passengers.

Located on Victory Road the bus station and waiting area will be highly visible to passing traffic. Security cameras and lighting will be complemented by an emergency phone to maximise safety.

The design for the park 'n' ride has been refined following community consultation and will also provide safter pedestrian access across local roads an an amenities blcok for passengers.

The proposed key features are:
  • up to 240 car parking spaces*
  • parking, ramps and indicators to ensure full accessibility
  • kiss 'n' ride area for people dropping off and picking up passengers
  • direct bicycle and pedestrian access
  • bicycle storage facility
  • sheltered waiting areas
  • comfortable seating
  • security cameras and lighting
  • aesthetic landscaping.

* A staged delivery approach has been developed and will be implemented to meet demand.

The first stage will see 120 car spaces built on the Victory Road side of the site with access from an extension of Village Avenue. The second stage will be built to meet demand and will include a maximum of 120 car spaces.
